British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
