Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
